The Degree of Happiness-Russell B

A British philosopher and Nobel laureate, Betrand Russell wrote his opinion on happiness in his book ‘The Conquest of Happiness’. Based on an excerpt (The Degree of Happiness) from his book, happiness can be differentiated into two sorts which are open to any human being and only to those who are read or write.

Happiness can be defined as a state of contentment, joy and good fortune. Also, happiness refers to the good emotion and mood of a person. In his book, Russell told us about his childhood memory regarding a man who bursting with happiness when he, with an enormous heights and incredible strength got a vote for parliament in 1885 although that man cannot read and write. Also, Russell told us about his gardener who felt happy by eliminates rabbits that destroy his garden. The gardener considers the rabbits as ferocious, destroyer and his mortal enemies.

Russell however, thought that the happiness of general, science and art people can be different based on their work performances, social relationships and people perceptions towards their works.

Some people may experience happiness and some unfortunately not realize they had experience it. General people gain happiness from many kind of aspects or situations such as being healthy, rich, success in their careers or lived with their loved ones like spouse, children, parents and friends. This happiness will remain depending on how people pleasure and treasure it.

The science people are considered as high educated people with satisfaction gained from their works and researches. They have the ability to invent something for the mankind’s benefits, gain trust and appear important not only for themselves but also people around them even though the people cannot understand their works.

In contrast, an artist or a poet may be criticized if their arts and literatures were bad or difficult to understand thus made them being in painful situation of not being appreciated by others. This is because poems, arts or pictures may have their own creativity, semantics and values which some people cannot understand.

In conclusion, human may experience different kind of happiness based on how they feel it. But, by the end it is the same feeling of happiness everyone will receive.

  • If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have paradise in a few years- Bertrand Russell

  1. happiness is not based only from the wealthiness, but it can be in many way, such as, what we love to do, etc. for example, russel's farmer happiness come when he enjoy chasing the "destroyer of farm" a.k.a rabbit from destroying the farm. this example clearly stated that happiness will come in many ways :)

  2. good explanation... although it is a difficult article, but you manage to come out with good explanation ... in my opinion, happiness is not only about money and wealth .. happiness can be find in love, lifestyle or something that we enjoy to do .. as example, in this article has been stated that the person who live as art people is hard to find their happiness... this because there is lots of things that have to worried about .. they live with full of stress because they afraid that their audiences cannot accept their art works and give bad perceptions towards their art works .. that makes them become stressful and they always make sure their works are perfect and satisfied their audiences..
