Why Some Women Choose the Wrong Man Time and Time and Time Again-Norment L

The excerpt ‘Why Some Women Choose the Wrong Man Time and Time and Time Again’ is an exhilarating exposition on the reasons of women who are repeatedly fall for wrong man. These women are probably not realize that they always get attracted for same kind of man, which are similar types of man from their previous relationships. Apparently, these women have been in distress relationships in the past even some of them refuse to realize it.

The author believes that females who are constantly choosing the wrong man are possibly to have not very good family history. This problem may relate to the females’ childhood or their relationship with their father. Women also tend to believe that they have power in the relationship. They feel they can change the man and have the ability to control the relationships and others’ behavior. As the society believe women are responsible in maintaining the harmony on the relationship or marriage, women only see their priorities which mean, they lean to constantly search for the wrong quality of man. These weak sex seems to get confuse in searching on what quality they should look for in a relationship. Moreover, some females who are fear of being alone also make this problem occur. Females seem to not achieve what they want in a relationship thus they are afraid to lose the bad relationship.

In conclusion, in order to choose the fit partner, women themselves also must know explicitly about what they really want in a relationship, as a woman and as a person. Even some of the women may experience different hardship during relationship, they must assess and make an effort to be better so women will have the ability to correct their mistakes from previous relationships and directly appreciate their capabilities and accept their own weakness. Apparently, both women and men have to learn from their past and achieve mutual understanding and concern to work out in a relationship.

Euthanasia-Mercy Killing

Euthanasia is the intentional termination of a very sick person to ease them from their illness. It also can be define as mercy killing or good death to relieve ones suffering. Euthanasia may ease the process of patient’s death but there are more disadvantages of euthanasia for the sufferer.

This mercy killing may help to reduce the pain suffered by patients who undergo both mental and physical pain but it also will make patients feel euthanasia is the best way to end up their suffer thus against God’s will and undermines society’s respect towards the purity of human life. In addition, the patients may rely too much to doctors to end up their life.

In Al-Quran, Surah An-Nisaa’ verse 29 stated that all forms of suicide and any action to kill another is forbidden. Thus, ones should evaluate the pro and contra of euthanasia in religion teaching and towards our society not only for the sanctity of life but also because we are valuable for ourselves.

Its Not How Good You Are,Its How Good You Want To Be-Paul Arden

Paul Arden, a former creative director for Saatchi and Saatchi who was responsible for some of the great campaigns of British advertising has wrote a topic on how the cleverest people at school are not those who make it in life in his first book, ‘Its Not How Good You Are, Its How Good You Want To Be’. This review will explain those who not perform well in their study also can success in life.

What people learn at school?
School is the medium for people to learn new knowledge and language with variety of learning methods. Schools tend to focus on academic subjects for the students such as learning known facts and searching answers for variety of unknown mathematical problems. Apparently, the more they can remember and solve, the better they will perform at their school. These make the people must have full understanding and expert in all the academic subjects in order to pass the grades and of course, to not make their parents angry.

From Arden’s opinion, those who fail at school are not interested in facts; or the facts itself are not put to them in a way they find interesting. Its does not mean that these people are stupid, they maybe do not have a great faculty for memory, do not have the ability to remember too many facts and their imagination has not been fired up by academic tuition.

Can people who not perform better in their school or college success in their life?
People assumed that those who are not perform well in their study will not success in their life afterwards but, there are some famous people who did not go and performed well in their study success in their life.

Henry Ford, who started one of the largest automotive manufacturing companies in world which is Ford Motor Company has never graduated high school. Ford was listed as one of the most influential people of the 20th century as being car manufacturer.

Bill Gates, the richest person in the world that has been listed 27 times by Forbes magazine is a college dropout. Then he devotes his energies to Microsoft, a company he had started in 1975 with his friend, Allen.

Nearly all rich and powerful people are not notably talented, educated, charming or good looking. They become rich and powerful by wanting to be rich and powerful-Paul Arden

The Sunny Side of Smut-Moyer M.W

Melinda Wenner Moyer, a freelance science writer based in Brooklyn, New York and frequent contributor to Scientific American Mind has wrote her opinion on the good effects of pornography as it prevent from violence acts. This review is based on her article The Sunny Side of Smut.

Smut or pornography can be defined as the visualization of erotic behavior such as animation, picture, sound, book or body gestures to cause sexual reaction. Apparently, pornography gives negative influences to humans’ relationship with others, society and within human itself. Pornography addiction seems to cause relationship problems (Arkowitz and Lilienfeld, 2010). Besides, some people worry that pornography addiction might cause violence against women. A study shows that terms relating to porn are by far the most commonly search-for terms in the internet search engines; which millions of people do searches related to porn industry everyday.

But, believe it or not a recent research shows that moderate pornography consumption does not make users more aggressive, harm relationships and people might less likely to commit sexual crimes. Dr. Neil Malamuth and Milton Diamond who conducted separate studies on the possible effects of pornography on both males and females found evidence contrary to their study. Malamuth indicated that the respondents who viewing pornography give benefits to their sex lives, attitudes towards sex, their perceptions and attitudes towards opposite sex and towards life in general. In fact, it is proven that there is no link between pornography in a culture or a society with the rate of sex crimes as it seems that when pornography is readily available sex crimes either it remain steady, or decrease.

In a nutshell, wheather pornography brings positive or negative effects to the viewers, it have little to do with the medium itself and everything to do with the person viewing it. Thus, people have to make their own decision to give the best for themselves.

Are you a Romantic or a Libertine?-Peck M. S

Dr. Morgan Scott Peck was born on 23 May 1936 in New York City was an American psychiatrist who focused his work on reassessing certain human conduct in social interaction. From the excerpt Are you a Romantic or a Libertine from his best-known book, The Road Less Traveled, Peck wrote his opinion on the feeling of love between human being and is this mutual attraction a real love and romance or just for manipulating the romantic code.

Love and romantic

Love is not something that can be simply defined as everyone has their own believe on how to define love. Based on the excerpt, love is a feeling of affection, fondness towards an individual. As love is hard to define, people can only feel love as a symptom and feeling of fondness and affection, with strong longing to be with someone or something that they loved. Yet, love also may come based on unexpected and insensible feelings that one has over another person.

Romantic can be defined as a common sense of attraction in the love affair. Romantic is necessary to begin the feeling of affection between lovers. Romantic is something that the lovers can give to convince and attract their beloved to be mutually attracted. Romantic is needed in one relationship to show appreciation, to impress and definitely, to establish a relationship.

Libertine
This type of person use love to attain their needs and personal delight. The Libertine totally has no concern about their beloved’s feeling and they only put their personal feeling first. Libertines have the ability to manipulate and trick their target, and have effective strategies and tricks to persuade and exploit them.

Eventually, people will experience being in love and they will decide whether it is meaningful or a bad luck for them.

We do not have to love. We choose to love-M. Scott Peck

The Steve Jobs Nobody Knew-Goodell J

Jeff Goodell who was born and raised in Silicon Valley is an American author, an editor at Russian literary journal and a technical writer at Apple. He graduated from University of California in English and has MFA in Fiction Writing from Columbia University. From the article The Steve Jobs Nobody Knew, he wrote his opinion about the inside look of Steve Jobs, a technology visionary.

The inside look of Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs was remembered as the man who brought the greatest invention to human’s digital world and he turn out to be one of the greatest visionaries of our time. However, did he become a great human in his personal life similar to his professional life?

Those who worked with him and knew him closely would described him as harsh, unapologetic person and he had a cruel management of driving his employees to satisfied is own needs and satisfactions in works.

As the Apple ascended, Jobs fully changed. He became more hot tempered and he treating people around him badly. Jobs denied his paternity when his longtime lover, Chrisann Brennan gave birth to his daughter, Lisa. He refused to provide any financial help to Chrisann and he became a distant father to Lisa. He continued to be stubborn and deny paternity until it was confirmed by a DNA test.

Jobs was a perfectionist and demanded perfection and originality in every detail. He only believed in himself and he was the only one who was right in all situation and decision. Consequently, he was fired in 1985 because he hijacked a team that was working on another project to create the first Macintosh computer.

Because of the company's own desperation, he was brought back to the company even he was still felt indignation with what happened at Apple. Eventually, he felt even bitter when his old enemy, Bill Gates was on his way to becoming the richest man in the world because of the operating system that Microsoft has modeled on the Macintosh.

We may not know the real Steve Jobs before reading the Goodell’s article and even after reading it. But, even how bad he was before, he was the one who recognized as the charismatic pioneer of the personal computer revolution and electronics fields, that benefits the mankind.

Fickle Friends-Weir K

Kirsten Weir, a science writer and editor, has experience over a decade writing for newspapers, magazines, website and books covering topics from neurobiology, climate change and evolution. Weir is skilled at translating tough topics into article that will entertain, educate and inspire her readers. From the article Fickle Friends, she wrote her opinion about how frenemies can be bad for people and ways to understand these mentally difficult relationships can make them less painful.

Ambivalent friends
No friendship is perfect, but frenemies are consistently imperfect. Ambivalent friends have mixed feelings towards their friend; which describe a complicated friendship. In their friendships, qualities such as understanding and warmth are accompanied by jealousy, rejection and criticism. These problematic friends or frenemies can encourage others and can bring them down for any possible reasons in any time. However, some of us do love our friends and do not want to lose them, no matter how much we are in pain and difficulties in having them as our friends.

Frenemy include
  • A person who give a hand and leave everything when his/her friend needs him/her, but in the end he/she criticizes and gossips about his/her friend.
  • Give support and encouragement to his/her friends when times are tough, but he/she cannot take pleasure in their friends’ successes.

Quality over quantity
Humans are a social species; their life include interaction and communication with lots of  people. But, a person with no friend because he/she afraid cannot manage the frenemies, may get other taxing effects, including depression, hypertension and cognitive decline. People who have ambivalent friends also tend to get high blood pressure, heart rate and stress.

Apparently, if one want to be happy (and healthy); having lots of friends is much less important than having good ones. It is because, people are not really concern about thoughtless comment made by frenemies than one made by someone who are supportive or loved by that person.

In conclusion, ones may not need to give up on their frenemies if they know how to manage the friendships and control their own behavior, needs and try being the kind of friend they want the others to be.

Thinking Folly-Tolle E

Eckhart Tolle, a spiritual teacher who was born in German wrote his opinion on his book ‘The Power of Now’ about how thinking can affect continuous conflicts and problems to the thinker and consequently separate one’s creativity and illusion from reality on their life.

Thinking create complex world with continuous problems and inner conflict
Thinking needs ones to live in a complex world with full of puzzles and conflicts. Thinking creates a wall of words, judgments and images that blocks all true relationships. Apparently, thinking has become a disease for all human being; people either use their mind wrongly or not use it at all. Human will not realize that their minds have taken over them as they believe their minds are what they are.

Imagination is more important than knowledge

According to Einstain, he values imagination more than knowledge as knowledge is limited to be known and understand while imagination embraces the entire world. Scientists, for example, create something that benefits mankind from a place of no-mind, from inner stillness. Einstain believed to create or make something, imagination will lead to the ideas and knowledge.

In conclusion, it wasn’t through the mind or thinking that miracle was created. Imagination does create miracles and dreams which is greater that the mind can work. Only then, people will believe that love, joy, peace and beauty arise from beyond the mind.

Men and Women are Merely Players-Greene R

A well known American author, Robert Greene wrote his opinion on role played by every human being in order to survive and gain power in their world. This review is based on an excerpt, Men and Women are Merely Players from one of his best-seller books, ‘The 48 Laws of Power’.

Actors who perform better in real life instead of theatrical life
Most of us may not agree with this statement but the truth is, everyone tend to appear nice, fair, civilized and decent in order to gain and achieve their own ambition and interest. Generally, these people only show their positive and good values to everyone but inwardly, they are charming, seducing and brilliant with a lot of tricks and strategies that can swindle their opponents and even friends to achieve things that benefits them. Apparently, these ‘actors’ are able to make people obey to their will without their realizing what the actors have done.

Innocence is the least innocent of all
Naïve and innocent people can be the best player among all class of people as they often exhibit their weakness and lack of power. They tend to show the good side and image to get others sympathy and attention. Making a show of one’s weakness is actually a very effective way, subtle and deceptive in the game of power to manipulate other’s mind.

In conclusion, each of the roles everyone performs is various and depends with the situation they have to experience. It is important to not to be to rigid and strict when playing their roles or else, these people will be controlled with greediness and pretentiousness in their life. People also must consider people around them have different intentions and behaviors, depend on how they view others.

‘Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great number who are not good’ -Machiavelli

From Hell (Jack the Ripper)-Hughes brothers

From Hell is a horror mystery film directed by the Hughes brothers in 2001. This film is about the Jack the Ripper murders. In my opinion, this film is interesting although it contain some obscene scenes.

Summary of From Hell

This film is about Mary Kelly and her small group of London prostitutes road. She and her friends living their life by entertained men who need them. But, the situation of these unfortunate women does get worse when one of their friend, Ann Crook is kidnapped and they are drawn into a conspiracy difficult than they could imagine. After the kidnapping, another woman, Martha Tabram was murdered horrifically. They are being hunted and one by one of the prostitutes are murdered terribly.

The murder of Martha made the Whitechapel chaotic. The police officer, Inspector Frederick Abberline conducted the investigation of the murder series. He, consumed drugs and it makes him dream scenes from the murders. Abberline’s investigations reveal that the murder is an educated person, due to the precise and diligence surgical method used.

Abberline’s investigations then lead him to Sir William Gull, a physician to the Royal Family, drawing on his experience and knowledge of medicine. Abberline involved deeply with the case and he, has fallen in love with Mary. It is then revealed that Gull is the killer. Mary Kelly does not die and she lives with Alice, Prince Edward and Ann’s daughter in a cottage on a cliff by the sea. Abberline is found dead because of opium overdose.

Why is Jack the Ripper So Famous?
Jack the Ripper is the name given to a serial killer who killed a number of prostitutes around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. The name originates from a letter written by someone claiming to be the murdered, published at the time of the murders. Jack the Ripper also known as The Whitechapel Murderer and Leather Apron.

Jack the Ripper has remained popular for a lot of reason. He was the first to appear at a time when the general populace had become literate and the press was a force for social change. Everyday the activities of the Ripper were published in the newspapers and the people living in the East End were unsettled. The press coverage made the murders a new thing, which the world had never known before. Also, the ways of killing used by Jack the Ripper were detailed and he has a good experience in using knife.

Generally, there were five victims of Jack the Ripper:
  •     Mary Ann Nichols, murdered Friday, August 31, 1888
  •     Annie Chapman, murdered Saturday, September 8, 1888
  •     Elizabeth Stride, murdered Sunday, September 30, 1888
  •     Catherine Eddowes, murdered at the same date.
  •     Mary Jane Kelly, murdered Friday, November 9, 1888

Unfortunately, the Ripper was never caught and it creates a mystery that people want to know and unsolved until now.

La Pianiste-Polanski R

The pianist (La Pianiste) is a war film directed by Roman Polanski and a co-production between Poland, France, Germany and United Kingdom. In my opinion, this film is about violence happen when war happens, the effect of war towards the citizen, socialization, economic growth and of course the development of a country itself.

The synopsis of this film
Wladyslaw Szpilman, a famous Polish Jewish pianist, worked as a pianist for the local radio, Warsow Radio. He witnesses the restrictions Nazis place on Jews in the Polish capital, the Invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939 and the outbreak of World War II. Wladyslaw returns home and decide to stay with his family as they hear Britain and France have declared war on Germany. They believe the war will end soon, but unfortunately it not.

As the German Army enters Warsaw, their living conditions degenerate as the Jewish’s right slowly eroded. They are forced into the squalid Warsaw Ghetto in November 1940. They face hunger, torture and even death. The Nazis become brutal and heartless and the Szpilman’s family witnesses many cruel happen on the other Jews. The destruction continues to happen and the family split.

The after effects of war
After the war, of course there will be many effects happen to the people and the environment within it. Destruction, lost of life and properties, and poverty happen. Millions of kids who should be at school, receive care and love from their parents were homeless for war. The family ties break as the children split with their parents. Moreover, a lot of citizen were died and this will lead the people and the family traumatized. They live in fear and it will affect their life afterwards. The destruction of the country will affect the development of the country and economy. Many building were destroyed, plants, farms and animals were died and corrupted. The people have to rebuild their nation and this will cost a lot of money and energy. Thus, if the people in one’s country do not have any faith, courage and determination to redevelop their country and socialization, it is not impossible for the country to be in war again.
  • One of the most horrible features of war is that all the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting -George Orwell, Homage to Catalonia.

All The Cool Kids Are Quitting Facebook- Wortham J

A reporter, Jenna Wortham has reported in her article in New York Times regarding a huge number of people quitting facebook have increase from year to year. Also, Wortham gives a lot of reason why this situation occur.

Facebook is a social networking service owned by Facebook. Inc, targeted to connect people with their friends, family and business associates. Yet, one of Facebook’s main selling points is to builds closer ties among friends and colleagues. While people are enjoying and connecting through Facebook, some of the people might not realize that Facebook may brings opposite effects towards its users.

Facebook may bring negative effect towards its users because there might be a gap between a people and the other person connected in it. Like other social networks, relationship between people in virtual life may be perfect, cordial and beautiful. But will the relationship in real life be perfect and cordial like in virtual life? Some of the people maybe can retain the relation in both virtual and real life but most of us couldn’t achieve it. Besides, Facebook connecting people only by updates and pictures by the users to the other users. What if a person who have close friends and not seeing her friends for a long time? Seeing your long lost friend in person and expressing your feeling in words are two different circumstances.

Other than that, one’s privacy after having a Facebook account may change. Facebook can be a suitable site to stalk or hack other users. A January 2009 Complete.com study stated that Entertainment Weekly, an American magazine included the site on Facebook’s purpose for some people are to stalk their exes, wishes their friends or colleagues’ birthdays and publicize their problems or activities to the other users. Thus, the users tend to have a common trust in others and in institutions as some of their friend in Facebook could be fakes and fraud.

In conclusion, social network like Facebook may have many negative effects towards the users but for people who manage to use Facebook wisely, they will not having problem to connecting in it.

The Degree of Happiness-Russell B

A British philosopher and Nobel laureate, Betrand Russell wrote his opinion on happiness in his book ‘The Conquest of Happiness’. Based on an excerpt (The Degree of Happiness) from his book, happiness can be differentiated into two sorts which are open to any human being and only to those who are read or write.

Happiness can be defined as a state of contentment, joy and good fortune. Also, happiness refers to the good emotion and mood of a person. In his book, Russell told us about his childhood memory regarding a man who bursting with happiness when he, with an enormous heights and incredible strength got a vote for parliament in 1885 although that man cannot read and write. Also, Russell told us about his gardener who felt happy by eliminates rabbits that destroy his garden. The gardener considers the rabbits as ferocious, destroyer and his mortal enemies.

Russell however, thought that the happiness of general, science and art people can be different based on their work performances, social relationships and people perceptions towards their works.

Some people may experience happiness and some unfortunately not realize they had experience it. General people gain happiness from many kind of aspects or situations such as being healthy, rich, success in their careers or lived with their loved ones like spouse, children, parents and friends. This happiness will remain depending on how people pleasure and treasure it.

The science people are considered as high educated people with satisfaction gained from their works and researches. They have the ability to invent something for the mankind’s benefits, gain trust and appear important not only for themselves but also people around them even though the people cannot understand their works.

In contrast, an artist or a poet may be criticized if their arts and literatures were bad or difficult to understand thus made them being in painful situation of not being appreciated by others. This is because poems, arts or pictures may have their own creativity, semantics and values which some people cannot understand.

In conclusion, human may experience different kind of happiness based on how they feel it. But, by the end it is the same feeling of happiness everyone will receive.

  • If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have paradise in a few years- Bertrand Russell

"The hardest thing about getting started is getting started.”

Guy Kawasaki (via tengbautista)
